Economic metal 3D printing company MatterFab wins $5.75 million in venture capital

Last July, Heavenly Agency reported on a startup named MatterFab, which is focused on creating an affordable metal 3D printer. The company claimed that its machine would be significantly cheaper than existing metal 3D printers on the market—by an order of magnitude. At the time, the company had not yet released a final prototype and said it planned to unveil its first test model at the start of this year. However, interest in MatterFab's technology has been strong. On May 27, 2015, the company announced it had secured $5.75 million in Series A funding, led by GE Ventures and Innovate Indiana Fund. The capital will be used to complete the commercial development of their first industrial-grade metal 3D printer. "我们的目标不仅是解决当前金属3D打印面临的最大挑战,还要彻底改变金属打印的能力。" said Matt Burris, CEO of MatterFab. "To achieve this vision, we will collaborate with some of the most experienced users in metal additive manufacturing technologies to develop new metal 3D printers." When it comes to industry leaders in metal additive manufacturing, GE is definitely one of them. Not only did they invest in MatterFab, but they are also deeply involved in the development of the company’s metal 3D printers. Currently, metal 3D printers cost millions of dollars and are mostly used by large corporations for prototyping and producing end-use parts. MatterFab’s technology, once launched, is expected to offer significant advantages, enabling more small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to shorten their supply chains and iterate faster at a much lower cost, ultimately saving companies a lot of money. Ken Green, managing director of Innovate Indiana Fund, commented: “Whether new or traditional industries, they will be affected by MatterFab’s technology as the market realizes its potential in additive manufacturing. We are very excited to be working with MatterFab. Their unique background in laser technology and CNC protocols will make them a leader in 3D printing.” MatterFab has also received support from Lemnos Labs, a well-known hardware startup incubator. Steven Taub, senior director of advanced manufacturing investment at GE Ventures, added: “GE Ventures is re-engineering the future of manufacturing and the factory floor. We believe MatterFab’s products and industrial applications have great potential. Their open platform brings flexibility to 3D printing systems, and GE and other industry leaders need to use additive manufacturing to create functional metal parts for our customers.”
