HiveHaven stops producing 3D printing hives due to high cost

Cost savings have always been one of the main advantages of 3D printing , but in many cases, people have forgotten that the cost of 3D printing itself is not low. Last year, a startup from Australia's Sunshine Coast, HiveHaven launched a 3D printing hive and launched a crowdfunding campaign.

It is understood that this hive is designed for a kind of stingless bee in Australia. This bee is not well-known, and the customized 3D printing hive can provide a comfortable environment and increase the survival rate. However, recently, the company revealed that they replaced the 3D printing hive with a honeycomb made of recycled plastic, and this is precisely to reduce costs.

There may be friends who remember that HiveHaven's previously launched 3D printing hive is powerful enough to prevent overheating, spore-induced diseases, and pest-derived inclusions including small bee beetles. Through the GPS positioning system in the hive, it can effectively hinder honey theft.

Although their crowdfunding campaign ended in failure, HiveHaven still installed GPS and radio frequency identification (RFID) on its 3D printing hive, claiming that these two things are essential artifacts for cultivating native stingless bees.

In terms of survival rate, their 3D printing hive is quite successful. Australian stingless bees are difficult to breed because they are particularly sensitive to inclement weather. In the event of a storm or hot weather, they will die in groups with a little carelessness. Therefore, the honey of the stingless bee is quite precious, and the price has always remained high. HiveHaven's 3D printing hive can adjust the temperature and living environment, which greatly increases the honey yield.

Despite this, HiveHaven had to give up the production of 3D printed hives because of the high cost. According to the person in charge of the company: Although 3D printed materials have a good performance in maintaining temperature, the price is too expensive. "With 3D printing technology , people can create a hive that is not affected by the outside world, and various viruses will not penetrate into it, but the problem is that the cost is too high, and the other is time. It takes too long to print a hive. ”

In order to save production costs, HiveHaven is currently looking for a recycled plastic as a raw material for the hive. It is understood that they are currently considering high-density polyethylene olefins (HDP), a fairly common recycled material that has similar properties to 3D printing consumables. Obviously, the cost of this material is much lower, and the current use is also the most extensive. The company's move also reflects the difficulties of many start-ups today: although 3D printing is a high-performance production tool, it is much more expensive than other manufacturing processes.
