Beijing furniture enterprises face the "life and death" pollution standard into a "tightening curse"

Just in the context of a group of furniture manufacturers that cause environmental pollution to move out of Beijing and move to Hebei, Beijing furniture manufacturers will face another “life and death”.

Furniture manufacturers have no way to go

According to the magazine, Beijing is formulating a very strict emission standard for furniture manufacturers. Recently, the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau held a site meeting at the Qumei factory, announcing the launch of “100 Environmental Protection Technology Reform Projects”. The core of this technical transformation project is to implement more than 100 air pollution prevention and environmental protection technological transformation projects this year, involving technical transformation and treatment of volatile organic compounds, desulfurization, denitrification and dust removal.

Zheng Zaihong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Pollution Prevention and Control Department, revealed that reducing pollutant emissions through technological innovation is an important task for Beijing. Standards for refining pollutant emissions to the industry will be introduced, and pollutant discharge standards for seven industries, such as furniture manufacturing, are also being revised, and will be introduced at the end of this year. This means that the pollutant discharge standards of the furniture manufacturing industry are more stringent. This standard will be the “tightening curse” of furniture manufacturers, and furniture manufacturers have no way to go.

The industry believes that the coating industry, including furniture manufacturing, is an important "contribution" source of VOCs pollution. Tan Chunlei, secretary-general of the China Coatings Industry Association, said that the environmental pollution caused by coatings comes not only from the coating itself, but also from the solvents used in the coatings. If VOCs are not properly treated, they will all be volatilized into the atmosphere, causing pollution to the environment. VOCs will also be chemically affected by environmental factors to produce pollutants that are more toxic than the original, thus forming secondary pollution.

According to Tan Chunlei, Qumei Furniture has announced that all its products are fully water-based. At present, Beijing has completed the replacement of the water-based paint project of Qumei Furniture, the water-based paint replacement project of the second plant of Foton Daimler Automobile Company, and the first-phase environmental protection technological transformation project of Yanhua Rubber Products. “This is an important part of the “100 Environmental Protection Technology Reform Project” of the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau.” Zheng Zaihong said.

According to the reporter, the focus of industrial emission reduction includes the control of volatile pollutants, which is also the fundamental way to solve the pollution of furniture manufacturers. Zheng Zaihong said that from the deployment of air pollution in Beijing, the treatment of pollution sources and volatility of furniture manufacturers is a "pain" that the paint industry must accept. There is no room for bargaining.

A person in charge of the China Building Decoration Association believes that the Beijing Municipality will impose high standards and strict requirements on furniture manufacturing enterprises, which will definitely bring changes to the development pattern of Beijing furniture manufacturing enterprises. The road to environmental protection technology reform of furniture manufacturers has not changed. In particular, from the "hard requirements" of atmospheric pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and soot, even the local enterprises in Beijing, the government and environmental protection departments are not likely to open a door.

According to the information in this journal, at present, only a few enterprises in Beijing furniture manufacturing enterprises collect VOCs. Only some enterprises will process and discharge VOCs, and most of them will release VOCs into the atmosphere freely.

Relocation of Hebei is also an expedient measure

In the face of this "hard move" by the environmental protection department, Zhu Changling, chairman of the China Furniture Association, has a very clear attitude: "After the standard is introduced, enterprises must rectify according to the standards. If they fail to meet the standards, they can only close the door and have no retreat." In the next nine industries, pollutant discharge standards may introduce national standards. At that time, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta regions will launch environmental protection technology reforms. Therefore, Beijing furniture production enterprises will move their sites to Hebei, and it may be just a matter of expediency, to solve fundamental problems, or to rely on thorough environmental protection.

So how does furniture production reduce emissions of VOCs? “The core is to replace traditional paint with water-based paint.” Yu Xiufen, vice president of the Beijing Furniture Association, said this. Beijing Furniture Association began to focus on promoting water-based paints as early as 2012. At that time, the association selected 120 companies above designated size to conduct surveys. According to sampling, only 8.3% of water-based paints were used. Although the proportion of water-based paints currently used has increased, it accounts for about 15%. However, Yu Xiufen believes that "most manufacturers have insufficient understanding of water-based paints. They believe that water-based paints are not up to standard in color and hardness is not enough, and some enterprises are worried that the cost of upgrading production lines is too high."

In this regard, Yu Pengfei, director of the planning department of Beijing Tiantan Furniture Factory, which already has two water-based paint production lines, said that it takes some time for water-based paint products to be accepted by consumers. As for the cost, compared with ordinary paint, water-based paint does not have the problem of who is taller or lower, and water-based paint can be divided into multiple grades according to different products. Therefore, it is absolutely unscientific to say that water-based paints are more expensive than ordinary paints.
