**2020 Food Safety Development Recaps in Anticipation for 2021 and Beyond – The Future is Now!**
Despite the ongoing challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, the food industry has continued to play a vital role in ensuring that safe, high-quality food reaches consumers. According to the FDA, there is currently no evidence that the virus is transmitted through food or packaging. However, as a precaution, it’s essential for both the industry and the public to stay informed about regulatory updates and follow science-based guidelines.
As we look ahead to 2021 and beyond, it's important to reflect on some of the key developments in food safety that are shaping the future of the industry in North America:
- **FDA’s ‘New Era of Smarter Food Safety’**: On July 13, the FDA released its blueprint for a more digital, traceable, and safer food system, aiming to reduce foodborne illnesses in the U.S.
- **FSIS Roadmap to Reducing Salmonella**: On August 22, the USDA’s FSIS launched a virtual meeting to introduce the roadmap for reducing Salmonella in meat, poultry, and egg products, aligning with the Healthy People 2030 goals.
- **FDA Outbreak Investigation Tool**: In November, the FDA introduced a new tool to track foodborne outbreaks and enable faster responses from its CORE team.
During the last quarter of 2020, the FDA cited a manufacturing facility for poor cleaning tool storage, which led to cross-contamination of ready-to-eat (RTE) products. This highlights the importance of proper tool selection, use, cleaning, storage, and maintenance—since tools can act as vectors of contamination.
Looking ahead to 2021, here are some key developments to watch:
1. **FDA Proposed Rule for Food Traceability**: Based on Section 204 of FSMA, this rule aims to enhance recordkeeping for certain foods. Finalization and further guidance on the Food Traceability List are expected in 2021.
2. **SQF Edition 9 Code**: Published in late 2020, the new edition emphasizes a sector-specific approach and food safety culture, aligned with GFSI Benchmarking Documents Version 2020. It will become the official auditing standard starting May 24, 2021.
3. **GFSI 2020 Updates**: New scopes of recognition have been added for Hygienic Design (JI and JII), signaling increased requirements for hygienically designed facilities, equipment, and tools in the near future.
