The FDA has consistently emphasized that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the virus can be transmitted through food or food packaging. However, it’s still essential for the industry and consumers to stay informed about evolving regulations and follow science-based guidance.
While the pandemic has brought many difficulties, it has also accelerated progress in food safety innovation and awareness. Here are some key developments from 2020 that will shape the future of food safety in North America:
- **FDA's 'New Era of Smarter Food Safety' Blueprint**: Launched on July 13, this initiative aims to create a more digital, traceable, and safer food system, helping reduce foodborne illnesses across the U.S.
- **FSIS-USDA Salmonella Reduction Roadmap**: On August 22, the USDA held a public meeting to introduce a new plan targeting Salmonella in meat, poultry, and egg products, aligning with Healthy People 2030 goals.
- **FDA Outbreak Investigation Tool**: Released on November 18, this tool helps track and respond to foodborne outbreaks more efficiently by supporting the FDA’s CORE team.
In the final quarter of 2020, the FDA issued an inspectional violation due to poor cleaning tool storage, which led to cross-contamination of ready-to-eat (RTE) products. This serves as a reminder that cleaning tools can act as vectors of contamination if not properly managed.

- **SQF Edition 9 Code**: Published in late 2020, this new edition emphasizes sector-specific food safety practices and culture, aligned with GFSI Benchmarking Documents Version 2020. It will become the official auditing standard starting May 24, 2021.
- **GFSI 2020 Enhancements**: Two new scopes of recognition—JI and JII—have been added for Hygienic Design, signaling a growing focus on facility and equipment design to improve food safety.
