I recently had the chance to work with Gel-a-Peel, a craft material that’s surprisingly versatile. When I first experimented with it, I wasn’t fully aware of how well it adheres to various surfaces. Not only is it fantastic on its own, but it’s also perfect for embellishing other objects. In the past, we’ve used it to decorate bags and notebooks, and even crafted jewelry. This time around, we received some adorable wooden jewelry boxes to transform, which turned out to be a super fun project. It’s an excellent idea for a group activity, especially at a kids' birthday party—everyone can personalize their box.
Alongside the jewelry boxes, we also got the Gel-A-Peel Pearly Pastel Pack, priced at approximately £19.99. It’s a beautiful set with a great variety of colors, making it ideal for beginners. The pack includes three tubes of Gel-A-Peel and additional items to help you create your own jewelry.
The accompanying cards are incredibly helpful, offering plenty of creative ideas for projects. Last time we tried this, we found the plastic sheet to be somewhat flimsy, but it’s easy enough to find a sturdier one online, like those available from Simply Plastics. We also appreciated the little molds provided, which are perfect for creating tiny shapes like flowers and gems. These are simple to use—you just fill them up and let them dry before incorporating them into your projects.
Gel-a-Peel is fantastic for kids aged eight and above. Once they get the hang of it, they can work independently. However, they’ll need a steady hand for more intricate designs. Each tube comes with interchangeable nozzles, similar to cake decorating tips, allowing you to create different patterns. My daughter, Molly, mastered the star nozzle and added little stars to her design.
We decided to convert the boxes into organizers for our crafting supplies. Molly labeled hers “Art & Craft†and adorned it with polka dots and stars, while I added a decorative edge. I think the color combination looks delightful.
After a few hours of drying, the boxes were ready to go. I think they’re quite charming and would make a thoughtful gift for a teacher or loved ones—you can even personalize them with names. We’re definitely planning to try this craft again soon.
