How to Package Chilled Goods
Whether you're in the pharmaceutical industry or looking to maintain the freshness of food during transportation, only high-quality technical solutions can ensure the safe delivery of your products. At Kite Packaging, we believe that premium quality doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. We strike the perfect balance between affordability and performance, ensuring that your goods remain protected and waste from spoilage is minimized while maximizing profitability.
Types of Coolants:
Â
First and foremost, selecting the right coolant is essential. These materials are placed inside the outer packaging adjacent to the items themselves, influencing the interior temperature. Their durability makes them ideal for overnight shipments, allowing businesses to transport goods over longer distances and expand their market reach.
When determining how much coolant is necessary for a specific package, a useful guideline is to aim for a solution that weighs approximately 80% of the product's weight. This ratio may vary depending on the type of product, but it serves as a solid starting point when planning how to package your chilled items.
At Kite, we currently offer two types of coolants, each with unique properties. Consider the priorities and requirements of your business to find the perfect fit for your needs.
1.      Ice Sheets
Our ice sheets are activated by submerging them in water for about 30 seconds, transforming them into gel packs. A key advantage of using sheets is their flat-pack arrival, which optimizes storage space—just one box of these sheets can equal an entire pallet of standard gel packs. Their multi-celled structure allows for significant flexibility, enabling them to be molded around products to reduce wasted space both within the box and in the warehouse. Once activated in water, the sheets can be frozen and used as reliable chilled packaging.
2.      Gel Packs
Unlike ice sheets, gel packs are simply frozen to maintain low temperatures during transit. They consist of an internal water-based polymer gel encased in an LDPE layer to ensure optimal hygiene when in contact with food. This plastic layer boasts high impact strength, minimizing the risk of damage and resisting chemicals to prevent any leaks or transfers from the gel.
Insulating Outer Layer:
Â
To maximize the efficiency of the coolant and ensure it performs to its full potential, a thermal external layer is crucial. This form of packaging prevents the transfer of heat energy from outside inwards, maintaining a highly controlled internal temperature and keeping your contents properly chilled. Depending on the size of your shipment, Kite offers a variety of options:
Â
a)Â Â Â Â Â Corrugated Box Liner
The latest innovation in chilled packaging, these corrugated liners are 100% paper-based, fully recyclable, and still functionally effective. Made from a minimum of 69% recycled material and FSC-approved, they match the temperature-controlling abilities of polystyrene-based liners, which are non-recyclable and harmful to the environment. Additionally, they arrive flat-packed, saving considerable storage space and offering a lower cost compared to previous eco-friendly chilled packaging solutions. These liners are an excellent choice for environmentally-conscious businesses aiming to minimize their ecological footprint while delivering premium-quality goods.
b)Â Â Â Â Â Temperature Controlled Pouches
These thermal envelopes are available in standard and premium designs. The standard version features a BOPP (biaxially-oriented polypropylene) outer foil layer with a double-lined bubble wrap inner for added insulation and cushioning. The premium version includes a metallized polyester outer layer to reflect heat away from the contents, a bubble wrap middle portion, and an inner HDPE foam layer for resistance against moisture and chemicals, providing further insulation. Both versions are flat-packed and easily assembled by hand. A key benefit of these pouches is their lightweight, slim, and flexible design, which helps to reduce postal costs while maintaining the necessary temperature control for packaging food, beverages, or pharmaceuticals. They are also liquid-proof and puncture-resistant, offering greater peace of mind.
c)Â Â Â Â Â Â Insulated Box Liners
Our liners are also available in standard and premium styles. They share the same qualities as the temperature-controlled pouches mentioned above, with the addition of a cardboard box. This adds an extra layer of cushioning and insulation, along with the metallic polyester outer layer and bubble wrap center, with the option of adding an HDPE foam sheet. The envelope is simply expanded and inserted into the box to provide thermal protection on every surface.
d)Â Â Â Â Â Thermal Pallet Covers
For those who need to package large quantities of food, beverages, or other parcels, a thermal pallet cover is the ideal solution. Acting as an insulating blanket, this lightweight product consists of a metallized polyester layer to radiate heat and sunlight outward, keeping the internal temperature low. The bubble wrap and inner layer of HDPE film provide resistance against punctures and water damage, secured with easy-to-use Velcro straps. The foldable, stackable, and lightweight structure of Kite’s pallet cover reduces warehouse and transportation costs while enhancing utility.
Used together, these products provide a comprehensive chilled packaging solution suitable for any temperature-sensitive items. For personalized advice, feel free to reach out to our team of product experts at 02476 420065.
