Polaroid's new PolaProof 1420 is not only designed for digital proofing, but it can also be used as a platesetter and digital press. It has a size of 8 on. It prints 12 full-color prints per hour with a resolution of 2,540 dpi. The PolaProof 1420 uses patented Laser Melt Transport (LAT) technology and offers four-colour setup standards such as SWOP, GRACOL and Eurocolours. It also offers Pantone-licensed green and orange in gold, silver and six-colour printing. In digital proofing or digital printing, the specific imaging process is such that the paper and the pigmented polyester layer are co-adsorbed on a cylinder with vacuum suction. The pigment layer, also called dynamic release layer (DRL), does not change under visible light and is heated by a fiber laser system in the printhead. The fiber emits a short, intense laser with a power of 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 watts per cm2. This is the energy required by the LAT, which causes the paint to fall onto the paper. Several colors have performed this process one after another, and colored prints have been obtained. Polaroid will soon produce a CTP plate for this device. In this way, this versatile PolaProof 1420 is very attractive to printing houses.
