On the eve of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on March 1, Huawei, a leading Chinese technology company, unveiled its first smartwatch, the Huawei Watch, during an event held in local time. The device features a circular dial and a sapphire glass screen, drawing comparisons to the classic Swiss watches that are highly favored by Chinese entrepreneurs.
The Huawei Watch runs on the Android Wear platform and combines traditional watch design with modern smart technology. It comes with a 42mm round dial and a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, offering a resolution of 400 × 400 pixels and a pixel density of 286 PPI. Powered by a Qualcomm 1.2GHz processor, it includes 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The watch also integrates a heart rate sensor and a barometric pressure sensor, allowing users to track altitude, monitor sleep patterns, and record various types of daily physical activities.
Available in silver, black, and gold, the Huawei Watch offers over 40 different dial designs and multiple strap options, enabling users to customize their style. It supports notifications for messages, emails, calendar events, and social media updates, along with voice interaction through Google Now.
Huawei’s decision to use a circular design was driven by user psychology. As the company stated, since people have always preferred traditional watch shapes, why not meet their expectations? This approach sets the Huawei Watch apart from competitors like the Apple Watch, which features a square dial.
At the event, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, emphasized that the Huawei Watch can display social media information and enable voice interactions using Google Now. The device is designed to be versatile, with interchangeable straps that cater to different tastes and lifestyles.
Although the exact price has not been announced yet, the Huawei Watch is expected to launch in the middle of the year. Meanwhile, Huawei also showcased its TalkBand B1, a wearable device that functions similarly to a smartwatch but with an added feature: it can act as a Bluetooth headset for hands-free calls, eliminating the need to constantly reach for a phone.
The wearable market is becoming increasingly competitive, and many consumers are still unsure if they need additional devices to complement their smartphones or tablets. However, Huawei remains confident in its strategy, aiming to establish itself as a major player in both the smartphone and wearable industries.
The TalkBand B1 will be available in China next month, with a global rollout planned for the second quarter in regions including Western Europe, the Middle East, Russia, and Japan. In Europe, it will be priced at 99 euros (approximately $136). With its compatibility with both Android and iOS systems, Huawei continues to push forward in the evolving world of smart wearables.
