Yuan Guibin, a deputy of the National People's Congress and vice general manager of Foshan Textile Machinery Co., Ltd., has once again brought up the topic of medical insurance during this year’s two sessions. On March 13, 2015, he proposed two suggestions aimed at improving the current medical insurance system. One of his key ideas is to include health check-ups and fitness-related expenses in the scope of medical insurance coverage.
He pointed out that although more people have enrolled in medical insurance since the implementation of the Social Insurance Law, the system has traditionally been used only when individuals are hospitalized due to illness. Health check-ups, which play a crucial role in early disease detection, are not currently covered by medical insurance. This creates a situation where people focus more on treating diseases rather than preventing them.
Currently, many companies provide regular health check-ups as part of employee benefits. However, some companies that offer health insurance no longer cover the cost of these check-ups, leading to fewer employees receiving regular medical screenings. This lack of access to preventive care affects not only employees but also ordinary citizens, retirees, the unemployed, and those with flexible employment, who often don’t take the initiative to get checked regularly.
To address this issue, Yuan Guibin suggested that health check-ups be included in medical insurance reimbursement. Additionally, he proposed that expenses related to sports and fitness activities could also be covered under medical insurance. For instance, a percentage of an individual’s personal account balance could be allocated for fitness expenses, or a fixed annual amount could be used for this purpose.
By integrating these elements into the medical insurance system, Yuan believes it would encourage people to take a more active role in maintaining their health through regular exercise and preventive care. This approach would not only help reduce the burden on the healthcare system but also promote long-term well-being and a healthier lifestyle across society.
