Recently, American artist Mike Doyle published the new book "Beautiful LEG O", which introduced more than 200 pages of the world's best LEGO art works.
“Every year, this thing (Lego) is becoming more and more complex, more and more technical, and getting better and better,” Doyle said. He is also a Lego artist, and he also shows some of his own works in the book.
As a graphic designer, Doyle has not touched Lego toys before , but did not pay much attention. One day four years ago, he took two sons to visit Legoland. He re-recognized this magical building block toy and then began searching on the Internet to see what others had designed with Lego.
After doing enough research on the assembly of LEGO brick technology, he started his first project. It was in 2009 that the housing crisis was in full swing, so he decided to make a decaying house. He spent hundreds of hours to complete his first work, and then completely fell in love with Lego, out of control. Today, he often spends a few months designing and setting up a Lego house. His works are getting bigger and bigger, the details are getting more and more refined, and the number of Lego bricks used in a single work is increasing. Million blocks.
Doyle’s point of view is “beyond the media”. In a way, he thinks that LEGO bricks are no longer just an "object", but a "tool", like a painter, who sees no longer a pigment, but sees the idea through the paint. Paintings. He called this a "transcendence."
Other works of art mentioned in the book "Beautiful Lego" also broke the boundaries and no longer stayed in the blocks themselves. An artist named Nathan Savaia used the cubes of LEGO bricks to create complex and beautiful curves.
Earlier this year, Lego built a 11-foot-tall, 43-foot-long, 44-foot-wide X-wing fighter in Star Wars with more than 5.33 million LEGO bricks. It refers to small blocks that are as big as the head, so the level of sophistication is amazing.
Other artists try to build the most exquisite and beautiful works with the least amount of bricks, such as Thomas Bowsum, who created a series of simple and elegant birds; and artist Misaka, whose snail series, All use only one piece of brick that can be held by one hand.
Others are masters of technology, such as Arthur Gujik. His LEGO creations are voluminous and huge. For example, he has used bricks to reproduce Angkor Wat and the Tower of Babel.
Doyle asked Lego artists from around the world to submit photos of their work and then organize them.
For Doyle, shooting is very important because his Lego works are often temporary and are demolished after the photo is taken. In this way, those building blocks can be used to create the next work. Because, although the price of each building block is only 5 to 10 cents, if it is used for hundreds of thousands of pieces of a piece of work, it is still quite burnt.
Doyle said that this book is not a thorough and comprehensive record, but a historical document of the LEGO art world.
“Every year we see new details and technology from online communication,” he said.
