Borouge Reduces Use of Beverage Packaging Materials for Sustainable Development

Borouge, a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Borealis, leverages its patented Borstar technology and over 50 years of expertise in polyolefins to support key industries such as infrastructure, automotive, and advanced packaging. The company's innovative BNT nucleation technology is widely used in the production of films, fibers, and thermoformed products. These technologies also play a crucial role in injection and blow molding applications, driving advancements in plastic bottle packaging, caps, thin-walled containers, and household goods. With a strong focus on innovation, Borouge continues to shape the future of plastics by combining cutting-edge technology with world-class solutions. In the beverage industry, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainable and efficient packaging solutions. Companies are striving to reduce unnecessary packaging, lower carbon emissions, and develop cost-effective alternatives without compromising product quality or safety. Packaging remains essential for protecting contents and minimizing waste, even when using less material. As a leader in value-added plastic solutions, Borouge addresses these challenges head-on, offering innovative HDPE beverage closures and shrink film solutions that enhance performance while reducing environmental impact. One of the key developments in this space is the shift toward lightweight sealing caps. The global beverage industry is increasingly adopting standard short-necked caps like PCO1881, which significantly reduce material usage. To meet this demand, Borouge introduced two advanced materials—BorPure MB5568 and MB5569—within its BorPure HDPE family. These materials offer excellent sensory properties, making them ideal for carbonated drinks, teas, and juices. While MB5568 is free of slip aids, MB5569 includes them to ensure optimal torque performance. Thanks to Borstar’s enhanced design capabilities, the new BorPure MB5568/9 materials provide a 50% improvement in environmental stress cracking resistance compared to previous versions, along with a 10% increase in hardness. These materials match the flow and processability of conventional unimodal MFR2 HDPE resins, ensuring consistent quality and appearance for end users while allowing for further weight reduction. Additionally, they are odor-free, ensuring batch-to-batch consistency and reliability. The introduction of BorPure MB5568/9 aligns with industry trends, such as the shift from two-piece PP seals to single-piece HDPE caps, which reduce both material and production costs without sacrificing sealing or barrier properties. This transition has been driven by standards like the 2006 PCO1881, which set a target of reducing cap weight by 20-30%. By leveraging Borstar’s advanced technology, Borouge ensures that lightweight caps maintain full functionality, supporting sustainable development across the beverage sector. In addition to closures, Borouge provides more efficient solutions for bundled packaging shrink films, helping beverage companies improve efficiency and reduce waste. Through continuous R&D, the company not only enhances product performance but also strengthens its position in the market, contributing to long-term sustainability in the industry.
