This shift is driven by the need for more efficient and cost-effective manufacturing solutions as the industry moves toward ultra-narrow bezel and flexible display designs.
Roll-to-roll ultra-fine line printing technology is expected to bring about a major transformation in the touch panel sector. The Industrial Technology Research Institute has partnered with Japanese printing equipment manufacturers to develop this cutting-edge technology and related machinery. It enables the production of ultra-narrow bezel thin touch modules and flexible touch panels with features that surpass current methods. By replacing the costly yellow etching process, this innovation offers a more precise and economical alternative for manufacturers.
Liu Junting, Director of the Institute of Electronics and Optoelectronics at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, explained that today’s narrow frame displays rely heavily on the width and spacing of conductive lines. Traditional screen printing typically produces lines around 60-80 microns wide, while gravure printing can achieve 30-50 microns. The widely used yellow photoetching process usually results in 30-micron lines. However, these technologies are no longer sufficient to meet the rising demand for ultra-thin borders and flexible touch panels. As a result, the industry is urgently seeking new conductive film printing solutions to overcome these technical challenges and stay competitive in the evolving market.
This advancement not only promises improved performance and design flexibility but also opens up new opportunities for cost reduction and increased production efficiency. With the right investment and adoption of roll-to-roll technology, Taiwanese manufacturers could lead the next wave of innovation in the global touch panel industry.
